About This Program

Explore the origins and motivations for terrorism, terrorist strategy, and terrorist tactics with the counterterrorism studies associate degree at American Public University (APU).

APU’s Associate of Arts in Counter Terrorism Studies will provide you with a greater understanding of our post-9/11 world along with the complexities of counterterrorism.

This online AA in Counter Terrorism program will also introduce you to the challenges and complexities associated with counterterrorism efforts that span the national security spectrum. Additionally, this program prepares you for involvement within public safety organizations.

What You Will Do

  1. Explore the theory and history of terrorism and political violence
  2. Identify different domestic and international terrorist groups, their leadership, and their tactics
  3. Recognize the motivations of terrorist leaders and their followers
  4. Determine the evolving nature of domestic and international terrorism

Students will examine the roles and responsibilities of U.S. Intelligence Community members and the support they provide to the federal, state, and local levels as well as the intelligence collection programs for supporting homeland security. Homeland security legislation and executive orders will be discussed, as will international law, conventions, and declarations. The central focus of the course is the balance of goals, strategies, and objectives for effective homeland security while preserving civil liberties. This course explores homegrown and domestic violent extremism in Western society, which has significantly increased due to the inspiration of domestic causes, foreign causes, and terrorist groups. This course examines the ideology of homegrown and domestic extremists and the different models of why and how people become radicalized and take violent action against their fellow citizens. Also addressed in this course is the increasing use of social media to recruit and radicalize individuals, initiatives to counter homegrown and domestic violent extremism, and efforts to de-radicalize individuals.

This course examines various elements and aspects of International and Domestic Terrorism. Students explore the cultural and ideological philosophies, as well as the social, economic, political, and religious conditions of select states, groups, and individuals that comprise the phenomena of terrorism. By examining the historical and contemporary aspects of terrorism students develop a working knowledge of the current Global War on Terror and are better prepared to comprehend terrorist motives and ideologies. Topics include: History and Development, Types of Terrorism, Conventional and Unconventional terrorist tactics, the Media’s impact on terrorism including the US Counterterrorism Policies. Particular attention is addressed to the Al-Qaeda terrorist network.
