This course is designed to provide the student with the skills necessary for developing a comprehensive, effectively written business plan for a new business venture. Every business benefits from a business plan. This class helps students understand that a business plan is more than a strategic plan. The motives for a business plan are largely the same for every business: to have an intent, purpose, and direction for the business. This course deals with the critical decisions and action steps entrepreneurs must make in both planning and executing a new venture. The business plan is often a tool used for those who may be interested in the business venture for a variety of reasons. Therefore, the plan must reflect the concept's viability and business model, the environment in which the firm operates, and the expertise of the management team to execute the plan.

Program Concentrations Put You in the Driver's Seat

No matter what entrepreneurial direction you've chosen for yourself, a specialized concentration in a master’s in entrepreneurship provides focus.

You may be looking to grow an existing company or start your own business. Perhaps you are a part of a larger corporation and hope to contribute to its success as an intrapreneur. Program concentrations may offer key concepts that help you define a strategy for success.

Program concentrations require a specified number of classes in addition to your core entrepreneurship courses.

We Celebrate Our Students and Their Small Businesses

Online master's students at American Public University come from many diverse business backgrounds, experience levels, and company or service types.

Gail Bruno , one of our successful grads, was already an experienced entrepreneur at the time she decided to attend APU. She and her husband had owned their business, Route 1 Guitars , for more than a decade when she decided to build upon her bachelor's degree with the online master's program.

When our entire economy suffered during the pandemic, her business not only survived, but thrived. She credits the problem-solving, business plan pivoting, and value creation she learned during the program for making the difference.

After running my business for nearly 10 years, I started to wonder how I could grow if I expanded my background and expertise with a master's degree. It's a good thing that I did too, because it was my capstone project that actually helped save my business during the pandemic. Having to write and rewrite my business plan and come up with so many angles for how I could position things made it so I always had options. During Covid when I really needed to learn to do things differently, to branch out and diversify my offerings, the master's in entrepreneurship program at APU had put me a step ahead, and for that, I'm so grateful!

As You Explore Master’s Degrees

American Public University's online master's in entrepreneurship is a Master of Arts degree, though in doing your research for academic options, you may find universities that offer a master of science. Here is a brief explanation of the difference in each degree type.

Master of Arts (MA)

Master of Arts degrees are based on a common core, liberal arts curriculum and tend to be more geared towards students interested in humanities-based subjects and gaining theoretical knowledge. Typically, with this type of master’s degree, students learn through coursework heavily influenced by group discussion as well as research projects. Degree completion typically requires a thesis, which involves research leading to a scholarly paper, or a capstone course. This course often is a project usually meant to represent a summative expression of your entire program learning experience.

APU’s master’s degree concludes with a capstone.

Master of Science (MS, MSc)

Master of Science degrees are known to be more technical and mathematical by nature. Disciplines in niche science-related subjects such as biochemistry and engineering tend to be categorized as a Master of Science. For entrepreneurship degrees leading to an MS, you might find classes revolving around research and data analysis. Like the MA, your program will usually require you to complete a thesis or capstone.
